Umberto Tozzi

Umberto Tozzi si è esibito al CHIN picnic sullo Bandshell Stage il 1° e 2° luglio. Il famossissimo cantante italiano, autore di brani di fama mondiale come “Ti Amo”, “Gloria”, “Gente di Mare” e tanti altri, ha cortesemente concesso una breve intervista a VIVO, poco prima di entrare in scena ed esibirsi davanti al pubblico dell’ Exibition Place di Toronto.

Allora, ci racconti un po’ di questo nuovo CD, Yesterday, Today.

Contiene i singoli della mia carriera, che ho rifatto insieme a Greg Madison a Los Angeles. Poi c’ è un altro Cd, che sono 10 brani inediti, siccome era qualche anno che non facevo più canzoni inedite, quindi ho scritto un po’ di roba e ho scelto 10 brani ed è una produzione credo molto importante per me, per il mio percorso musicale perché comunque avevo in qualche modo voglia di scrivere cose nuove anche perché mi andava molto di rifare le cose di master vecchi che avevo, di singoli specialmente, che volevo rifare a livello di sonorità, di suoni insomma, erano molto…mi piacciono di più adesso (ride)

VIVO (V:)Quindi sono stati riarrangiati a livello sonoro..

TOZZI (T:)Sono stati mantenuti strutturalmente più o meno uguali, peró le sonorità sono molto diverse, sono molto forti.

V: E dei brani inediti, ce n’ è uno che le sta particolarmente a cuore?

T: Ma no, non c’ è un brano in particolare che mi sta a cuore, perché sostanzialmente credo che sia un lavoro molto omogeneo, quindi abbiamo cercato di creare un tipo di sound … poi sai, ci sono canzoni che hanno più visibilità se sono singoli…per cui “Se Tu Non Fossi Qui”, è il singolo che è uscito in Italia

V: Ho sentito dire che sarà il singolo dell’estate…

T: Non lo so. Speriamo.

V: Ho sentito dire che sarà il singolo più gettonato dell’estate. Il video è molto bello. Poi ho notato questa influenza, o scelta, della lingua Inglese con le cover dei Beatles. Lei ha quindi cantato anche in Inglese. La differenza tra il cantare in Inglese e Italiano come la trova a livello di espressione?

T: Ma guarda, non è tanto la diversità, è che io la mia scuola, la mia cultura musicale nasce proprio dai Beatles perchè ho imparato a suonare la chitarra con le loro canzoni, quando ero ragazzino. È stata una chicca che ho messo in questo lavoro, peró tutto sommato, purtroppo non sono nato a Liverpool allora, devo cantare in italiano. (Ride)

V: E questo pubblico canadese come lo trova? Questi italo-canadesi rispetto al pubblico italiano?

T: Ma guarda, sostanzialmente ho sempre trovato un gran pubblico qui a Toronto. Quindi, è come essere a casa, insomma.

V:…Lei è amatissimo…

T: Ho sempre avuto grande accoglienza. Spero anche stasera ci sarà.

V: E dopo il concerto che cosa mangia? C’ è un rituale?

T: Un chilo di pasta (ride)

FRANCO VALLI: Una cofana di amatriciana.

V: Con la pancetta o con la bacon? Forse bisogna fare un compromesso.

FRANCO VALLI: con la pancetta, quale bacon.

T: Si trova qui la pancetta? Dove andiamo a mangiare stasera?

FRANCO VALLI: Non so, m’informo.

T: Il menù è importante.

Umberto Tozzi performed at the Chin Picnic on the Bandshell Stage on July 1 and 2. The famous Italian singer, who wrote songs of international fame such as “Ti Amo,” “Gloria,” “Gente di Mare” and many more, kindly granted a brief interview to VIVO, moments before his performance in front of the Exhibition Place crowd in Toronto.

V: Ok, tell us a bit about this new CD, Yesterday, Today.

T: It contains the singles from my career that I have revisited with Greg Madison in Los Angeles. Then, the other CD has 10 tunes, since it had been a few years since I had written original songs. So I wrote some material and I picked ten songs, and this is, I think, a very important production for me and my musical journey, because I actually wanted to write something new, and I also wanted to revisit some of my old material, singles in particular. I wanted to redo their sound; I like them much better now (laughs).

V: So they have been revisited in terms of sound…

T: They have been kept pretty much the same in structure, but the sounds are much different; they are cool.

V: And among the original songs, is there one that is particularly close to the heart for you?

T: Not really, there is no single song that is closer to the heart in particular because I basically think that it’s been a pretty homogeneous work. So we tried to create a particular sound… but then there are also songs that are more visible if they are singles… in fact, “Se Tu Non Fossi Qui” is a single that came out in Italy.

V: I heard that it’s going to be the single of the Summer…

T: I don’t know. Let’s hope so.

V: I heard that it will be the most popular single of the summer. The video is very beautiful. Then I also noticed this influence, or choice, of the English language with the Beatles covers. You have also sung in English. What is the difference between singing in English and in Italian in terms of expression?

T: You see, it’s not much the difference, it’s that my school, my musical culture was born from the Beatles because I learned how to play guitar through their songs when I was young. This was a little treat that I have put in this work, but overall, unfortunately, I was not born in Liverpool, so I have to sing in English. (Laughs)

V: And how do you find this Canadian crowd? These Italo-Canadians compared to the Italian crowd?

T: You know, actually I’ve always found a great audience here in Toronto. So, it’s like being at home.

V:…You are loved very much here…

T: I’ve always been very welcomed here. I hope the same for tonight.

V: And after a gig, what do you eat? Is there a ritual?

T: A kilo of pasta (laughs).

FRANCO VALLI: A truck-full of matriciana.

V: With pancetta or bacon? You may need to compromise.

FRANCO VALLI: With pancetta. No bacon.

T: Can we find it here? Where are we going to eat tonight?

FRANCO VALLI: I’m not sure. I’ll ask.

T: The menu is really important.
